What is the Difference between Platyhelminth, Trematode, Nematode and Annelid

A large number of creatures exist in this world, from large animals to tiny worms. Every living thing has its own needs and requirements. Generally, we rank things according to our own criteria that how they are beneficial for us. Some small worms are beneficial for human beings while few others can cause infection of various kinds. Platyhelminth, Trematode, Nematode and Annelid are few examples of these worms. Here we are describing the difference between them.

Platyhelminth

We can call these animals as smallest animals, which are bilaterally symmetrical. They are commonly called as flatworms. Their bodies have one opening only. Body cavity is very large and in large animals, it is branched. Process of respiration takes place through diffusion, which is another cause for their flat body.

Trematode

Trematode also belongs to phylum Platyhelminthes. They consist of two groups of flatworms, which are parasitic. Trematodes are also called as Flukes. Commonly, they cause infection in fish, mollusks and vertebrates. Presence of two suckers is the distinctive feature of this class.

Nematode

Nematodes are the most diverse group of animals, which are also called as roundworms. Majority of them are parasitic in nature, but not all of them. Their digestive system is like a tube, and has openings at both ends.

Annelid

Annelids are segmented worms and include worms like earth worms, leeches and rag worms. They are present in moist environments, in marine water and fresh water. Blood vessels are present in these animals. Members like earthworms are very important for terrestrial food chains.

Platyhelminth, vs Trematode vs Nematode vs Annelid

All these are different groups of invertebrates. They look same but actually they are really different from each other. Platyhelminths are commonly called as flateworms, while nematodes are roundworms. Trematode s are a class of platyhelminth. Platyhelminth has single opening, while in nematode, gut in like a tube with two openings. Annelids are bit advanced animals, and have blood vessels. Most of these animals are parasitic in nature. Some cause diseases, while others are useful too.
