What is the Difference between Scallops, Clams, Oysters and Mussels
Life is present in many different forms on this planet earth. Large animals, birds and insects are the most common forms of life. However, water bodies also hold a great verity of living creatures. Bivalve Mollusk is the family of invertebrates, which have great variations in size nd shape. Scallops, clams, oysters and mussels are all part of this family, but yet they are different.
Scallops
Scallop is a marine inhabitant and a bivalve mollusk. Members of this family are found in all the oceans of the world. Shells of these animals are fan shaped and have very bright colors. That’s why shell collectors love to have shells of scallops.
Clams
These bivalves burrow in sediments. Clams are widely used as a source of food. Used with pasta or in verity of soups. They are usually small in size and oval in shape.
Oysters
These bivalve mollusks live in marine or brackish water. Their shell is quite thick, as compared to other bivalves. Pearl oysters are famous all over the world and unlike other verities of oysters they are not consumed by human.
Mussels
The term commonly used for almost all the members of mollusca family. They are found in salt and fresh water. The shells of mussels are not symmetrical and usually it is elongated. The cover of shell is usually dark in color while interior of shell is usually silver.
Scallops vs Clams vs Oysters vs Mussels
These invertebrates belong to kingdom animalia and have bivalve shell, which means shell is divided into two parts. Majority of them found in sea water like scallops and oysters, while some are also found in fresh water like mussels. A great verity of these creatures is used for eating purposes, but not all of them. Clams burrow in sediments, while oysters and mussels attach themselves with substrate. Scallops can swim and often migrate from one place to other.
