What is the Difference Between Similar But Different Things, Terms, and Objects

What is the Difference between Data and Information

When a person walks to a garden or somewhere else, he observes many things by using senses like he smells flowers, see flowers, touch flowers, hears sounds and can taste flowers as well. He observes not only the flowers but also the plants containing flowers, sidewalks, people in the garden, birds etc. It all increases his knowledge about flowers. Data and information both are the words used for knowledge. Mostly the words, Data and Information, are used interchangeably. However, they have not only different use of them, but also different definitions as well. In coming lines, their differences will be elaborated.

Data

Data is the raw knowledge of something, like roses are red. It is data. Observation is the best source of data. Data can be collected via observing different associated things. Books are a good source of data about anything. Similarly, internet is a better source of data as it is practically impossible to read books about anything but internet gives us the required data directly. Data is the set of raw facts about anything which is being observed.

Information

Although meanings of information are sometimes overlap with the meaning of data, but more precisely when collected data is processed or manipulated, the result of it is called information. Information is the useful part of data and without proper information, our data is useless.

Data vs Information

Any one, who wants to read the difference between data and information, must read this detailed description. Data is the raw knowledge just like when a researcher collects the facts about anything like about cow. After collecting the data the researcher studies that data, matches it with some other prior data or simply process it for further manipulation and finally brings out something useful out of it. This useful part of this data is called information.
