What is the Difference between Further and Farther

Both further and farther are two commonly used adverbs, but having different meanings. In routine life, people do not bother about these two different terms. The major reason is that both words sound alike and there is difference of only one letter in the spellings of both words. Moreover, both words are used for describing distance. So, it becomes very hard to understand the proper usage of individual words in any sentence. To avoid this confusion, I am here to clear the difference between further and farther.

Further

The concept of “further” is little bit complex than farther. Actually, the use of “further” is not only restricted to adverb, it is also used as verb. When we use “further” as adverb, we talk about advancement in time or something more than present. On the other side, the use of “further” as verb means take action for advancing something.

Farther

When we want to denote the distance in terms of physical advancement, then we use the adverb “farther”. You can say that “farther” means advancement in space or any existing place. You cannot only see but feel this distance as well. Moreover, the distance described as “farther” can be measured as well.

Further vs Farther

The first and major difference between further and farther is that the former is used as both adverb and verb, while farther is only used as an adverb. Similarly, further means the distance in terms of time, but farther is the distance in terms of space. Moreover, further is an abstract quantity as compared to farther that is an actual and measurable quantity. In terms of verb, we can use the word “further” to denote some additional. However, we cannot do this by using the word “farther”.
