What is the Difference between White and Red Blood Cells

Blood consists of two kinds of singular-functional cells, red blood cells and white blood cells. These cells have different functions keeping their place into one fluid. Both are essential for the blood to carry essential nutrients and oxygen and to kill the unwanted elements in the blood. They are different in structure and make different proportion of blood that flows in the body.

Red Blood Cells

Red blood cells are also called erythrocytes. They make the color of the blood i.e. red color. Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to all parts of the body. They also pick carbon dioxide from the body parts. The essential element in red blood cells is called hemoglobin. This element keeps the oxygen within the red cells so that it can be carried and transported without any loss. The smooth functioning of red blood cells gives the body, energy. Due to the low red cell count, people feel tired and sleepy (called anemia) and due to the higher red blood cell count people are exposed to heart diseases.

White Blood Cells

White blood cells are also called leukocytes. These blood cells fight with the foreign cells and organisms that intrude in the entire body.  These cells fight with every parasitic organisms and bacteria. T-cells, one type of white blood cells, do not function in the presence of HIV infections. Leukemia is the disease which attacks body due to the high white blood cells count while some psychiatric medications cause the down in the count of white blood cells.

White vs Red Blood Cells

There are approximately 5 million red blood cells in one cubic meter of blood while only 3000 to 7000 white blood cells are found in the same amount of blood. The life span of red blood cells in around 120 days whereas the white blood cells live up till 4 days only.  Another major difference between two is that red blood cells can change their shape and can adjust themselves according to shape whereas the white blood cells do not change their shapes, they only multiply themselves.
