What is the Difference between Saturated and Unsaturated Fats

Both saturated and unsaturated fats are found in our food which we daily consume.  Their consumption is important to make the body functioning. The joints of the body need grease to work properly just like a machine needs grease to work without friction. But abnormal consumption of fats could lead to health hazards. Therefore a normal diet with normal quantity of fats is recommended. Both, the saturated and unsaturated fats have differences, which are discussed below.

 Saturated Fats

Saturated fats are found in the animals. In the food that we eat daily, taken from animals, we consume saturated fats. In dairy products (cream, milk, yogurt etc), meat (red meat) are the products with high saturated fats level. In the molecule of these fats, the hydrogen atom is found in saturated level. The bonding between hydrogen atom and carbon atom is not the double bonding (since these two atoms are present in every organic compound). They contain high cholesterol level, the LDL cholesterol.

Unsaturated Fats

The unsaturated fats are found in foods like olives, dry fruits, avocadoes and other plant oils. They are liquid at room temperature.  The molecular structure of these fats contains double bonding.  The cholesterol level in unsaturated fats is HDL which means it contains good fats.

Saturated vs Unsaturated Fats

The first difference is the source from where these two are taken. Saturated fats are taken from animal food that we consume and unsaturated are taken from plants, dry fruits etc. Saturated fats have molecules, saturated with hydrogen atom and it does not contain double bonding, while unsaturated fats are exactly opposite in structure and composition. The saturated fats contain LDL cholesterol which is detrimental to health and effects heart while unsaturated fats contain HDL cholesterol which is good for the health as well as for heart patients. For good diet and better health, unsaturated fats should be added into the diet while saturated fats’ consumption should be limited in our daily meal.
