What is the Difference between Poisonous, Harmful, Toxic and Hazardous

There are different terms of substances or materials which can damage the human or animal health. They can also affect our environment. There are different terms used to specify the effects of these dangerous materials like Poisonous, Harmful, Toxic and Hazardous. Let’s have a look on difference between them.

Poisonous

A poison is a substance which causes disturbance in organisms in terns of biology. It is produced due to some chemical reactions on molecular scale. The field of zoology and medicine differ the poison from toxin and venom.

Toxic

It is a degree which determines that how much a toxic substance can damage a living or non-living organism. It is usually refers as a whole effect on any organism.

Hazardous

It is another property of a substance, which tells that how much that substance is injurious to health. A hazardous material can be flammable, reactive and toxic. There are two categories of hazardous waste, characteristic and listed hazardous materials.

Harmful

Harmful is a value which shows the damage or loss of a person or property. It means to be susceptible to damage.

The difference between poisonous and toxic is, poisonous is a term used for substances which can cause disturbance in organisms. They are absorbed through skin or gut. While a toxicity is produced by some biological functions in organisms. Both have bad effects on health. The difference between hazardous and harmful material is, a hazardous material contain some specific properties like toxicity, flammable and reactivity. it has a very bad effect on the public health and environment. It may be in different physical sates like solid, liquid or gaseous. While harmful is a term refers to any substance which can cause damage and may be destroy any living and non-living object.
