What is the Difference between Atrium, Atria and Ventricles
The heart is the no doubt, most important part of our body. Our heart is composed of four chambers; two upper and two lower which are called atria and ventricle respectively. Basically, the heart is a pump and clean the blood or you can say covert de-oxygenated blood into the oxygenated blood to supply clean blood to all parts of the body. Both atria and ventricles are obviously, the part of the same body organ but they are different from each other in many respects. This is the piece of writing which will explain you about the individual function as well as the difference between these upper and lower chambers of our heart.
Atrium
The atrium is the top chamber or compartment of our heart and there are two atria of each heart; right atrium and left atrium. Collectively, these right and left atrium is called atria. In very simple words; the function of atria has been just to facilitate continuous venous flow. The right atrium collects deoxygenated blood from veins and transfer it right ventricle. From here, oxygenated blood reaches to the left atrium and then to the left ventricle. Shortly, we can say that atria collect the dirty blood coming from all parts of the body by means of blood veins and deliver this blood to the ventricles.
Atria
Atria is nothing but the plural of atrium (the chamber of the heart).
Ventricle
The ventricles are the lower and bigger chamber of the heart. The function of the right ventricle is cleaning or oxygenating the blood by passing it through the lungs and the function of the left ventricle is to supply this oxygenated blood to all body parts by means of the arteries. The ventricles have thicker walls and very muscular parts of the heart.
Atrium vs Atria vs Ventricles
The upper chambers of the heart are called atria and the lower one are called ventricles. Similarly, there is further division of these upper and lower lower compartments which are termed as left and right atria or ventricles. Atria has been just the plural of atrium. The difference between the atria and ventricle is that, the ventricles are the larger compartments of the heart than the atria. Moreover, they are simply different with respect to function, as atria takes dirty blood from body parts and ventricles deliver clean blood to body parts. Furthermore, atria have thinner walls and less muscular than the ventricles.
