What is the Difference between Esophagus and Trachea
The human body is made up of a variety of complex distinct systems like digestive system, respiratory system, nervous system etc. Every stem is responsible for different functions and made up of several organs. It is not necessary for each human body system that its concerned organs must be near to each other. The organs of any one system could be at a distance from each other. Now to connect these organs, some pipes or connecting bodies are also required. Esophagus and Trachea are the names of such connecting parts which join the different organs of our body system. Here is the difference between Esophagus and Trachea.
Esophagus
Esophagus which is the part of alimentary duct is the muscular tube in the human body and other vertebrate animals. It is the organ which connects the stomach with pharynx. The function of Esophagus is to deliver the food from the mouth into the stomach and act a passage for food particles to become the part of the digestive system. In this way, the esophagus is the also the part of the digestive system with 25-30 cm tube like structure. This connecting tube consists of three parts which are abdominal, thoracic and cervical.
Trachea
Trachea which is the part of the respiratory system is also a tube like structure. The function of trachea is to move the air into bronchi. In other words, it is responsible for supplying the oxygen to all parts of the body. The common name of trachea is windpipe and it is wide and strong tube which remain open all the time. It consists of two parts; cervical and thoracic area. The length of trachea is 10-16 cm.
Esophagus vs Trachea
With respect to construction, both esophagus and trachea are tube like organs. However, they are different from each other in many respects. The esophagus is the part of digestive system instead of the trachea which is the part of the respiratory system. Moreover, trachea remains open all the time to provide a consistent supply of oxygen to all body parts unlike esophagus which act as just a passage to deliver food from pharynx to stomach. Both organs are different from each other in terms of length as well. The length of the esophagus is 25-30 cm and it is not as wide as trachea which has length 10-16 cm. Moreover, esophagus consist of three parts instead of the trachea which is made up by two parts.
