What is the Difference between Lava and Magma

The earth’s core is not the same as its crust looks. Earth has three layers, core, mental and crust. In the core there are molten rocks no solid rocks or solid material can be found there. Then comes mental or the middle part of the earth which is also hot but not that hot like core and then come the crust. The molten rocks travel from core to crust and erupt through volcanoes. However the lava and magma are often used interchangeably which is not right.

Lava

Lava is the hot stuff that comes out of the volcano when a volcano is active. An active volcano may live idle for 200 years but from it lava can be expected any time. The lava could be thin or thick depending upon it s viscosity (thickness). Thin lava flows down and can move through several kilo meters while thick lava cannot move down the hill. It sticks to the boundary of the volcano. The temperature of the lava also decreases when it comes out.

Magma

Magma means the molten rocks, which are extremely hot. It resides beneath the earth inside the hollow spaces of the solid mental. From there it travels to reach the crust. Magma’s temperature range from 700 c to 1300 c.

Lava vs Magma

The basic difference between lava and magma is that lava is that molten stuff that comes out of the earth’s crust while when it resides inside mental it is magma. The second difference is the temperature of both. Lava gradually cools down when it comes out under the atmosphere while magma is extremely hot 700 c or 1300 c. Lava could be thick or thin while magma’s viscosity is lower than the thick lava because of the immense heat inside earth. Lastly, magma is in earth’s core and lava is outside earth.
