What is the Difference between Straw Poll, Caucus and Primary Elections

Everyone has different opinion about an issue, or his own likes and dislikes about a particular problems or person. This is accepted on personal level, but when it comes to an organization or group censes is required for the proper working of groups, same is true for a country. In order to know the opinion of all the members of a party or group, different methods are used; Straw poll, Caucus and primary elections are some such ways. Here we are describing difference between them.

Straw Poll

Straw poll is also called straw vote. In this style of voting, results are not binding. It actually provides a platform for dialogue on different issues in large groups or parties. When a political party or social group wants to work on a new idea, they plan a straw poll to see that if there is enough support in favor of that idea or not.

Caucus

Meeting of supports or members of a political party is called as caucus. This term was initially used in United States and Canada, but now it is used all over the world. Although, the basic meanings are same but in different political cultures it is used in different meanings.

Primary Elections

An election within the party, which is organized to select a candidate for a particular seat in general elections, is called as Primary elections. Primary elections are responsibility of political party and it has nothing to do with the government. It is a common practice in many countries.

Straw Poll vs Caucus vs Primary Elections

All these are different styles of voting. In Straw poll results are not binding, as it is a discussing style of voting, while in caucus and primary election, we get definite results. All three are used to know the opinion of members of a political party or group. Caucus is just a meeting, while straw poll is the next step, in which opinion of members about an issue is collected. Primary elections are the final step within a party, when all the members choose their candidate for general elections. In this way, all there are used at different stages.
