What is the Difference between Lime Asphalt Grout Mortar Cement and Concrete
With the passage of time, demand of construction work is increasing rapidly due to increase in population swiftly. Different types of construction materials like cement, asphalt, lime, mortar and grout which have different characteristics are used in construction with different proportions. They all strengthen the buildings. Let’s have a look on difference between all of them.
Cement
It is the most common construction material. It is derived from a roman word caementicium, which is used for a binding material. It is mixture of volcanic ash and burnt lime, now a day it is called cement. It is of two types, hydrolic or non-hydrolic.
Lime
It is another construction material, which is largely used as building and engineering material. Basicly lime is calcium containing inorganic material in which carbonate, oxides and hydro-oxides are more dominate. It is used in all limestone products, concrete and mortar.
Mortar
Mortar is a binding paste. It is a mixture of different materials like cement, sand, lime and water. It is used to bind the construction blocks and fill the gaps between bricks. It becomes hard, when it gets dry.
Asphalt
Asphalt is the old name of bitumen. It is a thick, sticky and viscous liquid or semi-solid. It is used in road construction as a binder mixed with aggregates. We get it from distillation of crude oil.
Concrete
Concrete is derived from a Latin word ‘concretus’ means compact or condensed. It is a combined mixture of different construction materials like cement, fly ash, sand, lime stone and water. It gets solid after getting dry.
Grout
It is another construction material. It is used in filling of voids and embeds rebar in masonry walls. It is also a mixture of cement, sand, color tint and water. It is of many types.
Cement vs Lime vs Asphalt vs Mortar vs Concrete
There is a very little difference between all above mentioned materials. The difference between cement and lime is that cement is mixture of volcanic ash and lime while lime is an in-organic material containing calcium, carbonate and oxide. They both are used as construction material and often used both as a mixture. Grout and mortar are both binders in the form of paste or liquid. The difference between mortar and asphalt is that asphalt or bitumen is a sticky semi-solid material which is used in road construction, while mortar is used to fill the gaps between bricks. Another difference between both is that mortar is mixture of cement, lime and other materials while asphalt is a distilled product of crude oil. Grout is also a mixture of materials which are used in mortar. But the difference is in use of both materials. Concrete is not a specific material. It is a mixture of many construction materials like cement, lime, sand and some chemicals.
