What is the Difference between Aqueous Coating, Sealer, Stain, Varnish, Shellac

Wood is used all over the world for different purposes. Different types of wood are used for making goods and furniture. However, proper protection and care of wood products is necessary not just for the beauty but long life of these goods. Aqueous coating, sealer, stain, varnish and Shellac are some products, which are used for the protection of wood. Here, we are mentioning difference between them.

Aqueous Coating

A water based protective coating, which is used for the fine finishing is called as aqueous coating. It provides wood a glossy surface, which protect wood from dirt, smudge and scratches. It is also used in printing broachers and other advertising materials.

Sealer

Sealer is also a protective product. It protects the wood from any harmful chemicals. It seals the pores in the wood and protects it from all harmful chemicals. A great verity of sealers is available in the market.

Stain

Stain is a two in one product. Stain protects the surface of wood, but it also changes the color of the wood. If you are using stain for your wood, there is no need to use sealer, as it acts as sealer too.

Varnish

Varnish is a transport finish, which is hard in nature and protects the wood. Not just for the wood, but it is also used for many other materials. Varnish is a glossy finish. It has no color or added pigments, unlike paints and stains.

Shellac

Shellac is a type of varnish, but it is water resistant and soluble in alcohol. It is used for outdoor surfaces and on those places, which have consistent contact with water, like bathtubs. It is natural based, as shellac is secreted by an insect.

All these are different types of protective layers, which are used generally for wood, but for many other materials too. Aqueous coating is water based finish, gives a glossy finish to the surface on which it is used. Sealer is the protective covering, which protects wood from dirt and scratches. Stain is also a sealer but it also gives a new color to the surface. Varnish is transparent finish, on the other hand Shellac is also a varnish but it is soluble in alcohol. Shellac is used on surfaces like bath tubs and sinks.
