What is the Difference between Filament, Fabric, Wool, Fibre, Yarn and Thread
Textile materials are available in various forms depends upon the nature of raw material, type of manufacturing process, stage of production an end-use. Filament, Fabric, Wool, Fibre, Yarn and Thread are some forms of textile products that are very different from each other in terms of all above described factors. Filament
A filament is a continuous strand of fiber with much longer length than staple fiber. All man-made fibers are filament fibers, but only one natural fiber is filament fiber that is silk. Filaments are of two types; mono-filament and multi-filament.
Fabric
Fabric is the end-product of weaving or knitting process of textile industry. A fabric can be constructed in both weave or knit pattern. The type of fabric depends upon nature of raw material, type of yarn , type of weave or knit construction and way of forming fabric by adopting different techniques of weave or knit process.
Wool
Wool is a natural fiber with having major constituent as protein. Wool is obtained from fleece of animals mostly from sheep hairs and sometimes from hairs of goats and camels. This is the best raw material for making winter season apparels thanks to its excellent warmth property.
Fiber
A fiber is the principle raw material for making textile products like yarn and ultimately fabric. Fibers are hair-like strands with much longer length than its diameter. Fibers are mainly available in two major types; natural and man-made.
Yarn
A yarn is the long twisted and drafted strand of bundles of fibers either natural, man-made or a combination of both in the form of blend. It is the end-product of spinning process in textile industry. The diameter of yarn is measured in count that determines its strength, appearance and ultimately quality of fabric as well.
Thread
The term “Thread” is typically used for ply yarns. When two or more than two yarns are twisted together to make a play yarn by means of doubling process that comes after spinning, the end-product is called thread. The best example of thread is sewing thread.

As fiber is a long hair-like structure that is much superior in length as compared to its diameter, so it’s one form is called filament fiber. The word filament is typically used for man-made fibers but sometimes for one natural fiber that is silk, as all these fibers have much longer length than staple fibers. Wool is also a form of natural fibers that is a very favorable raw material for making fine-quality and comfortable winter apparels. Yarn is the product of first textile manufacturing process that is called spinning, but thread is its extendible form made by doubling of two or more yarns by means of imparting twist. Fabric is the ultimate product of textile industry that is either made from weaving process or knitting process.
