What is the Difference between Xml File, Txt File, Csv File and Excel File

Documentation of computer has made the life of human being very easy. Today, we can work on variety of file extensions to put and process our data. Some file extensions allow alphabetical data and some mathematical, while some allow both formats. Xml File, Txt File, Csv File and Excel File are the names of some commonly using file extensions that we access on our computer. Let’s see the difference between them.

Xml File

Xml or Extensible Markup language is the file format that is designed to carry data rather than displaying it. Xml is markup language that does not offer predefined tags and used for transportation and storage of data. It is W3C recommendation as well.

Txt File

.txt is a file extension of text file that is used for data storage. This file format consists of simple text even with bold or italic. These files are easy to open and read in any text supporting program.

Csv File

CSV or Comma Separated Values is a file format that supports large database information and spreadsheet in the form of plain text file. In this type of file format, each record is displayed in individual line that is separated by commas and it is easy to open this file format even in Notepad.

Excel File

Excel File is a highly developed file format that is a part of Microsoft Office and developed by Microsoft to support, process and store large spreadsheets. The salient features of Excel file are calculations, piuvot tables, graphical tools and support for Visual Basic.

Xml File vs Txt File vs Csv File vs Excel File

Xml File, Txt File, Csv File and Excel File are the computer file formats, but differ from each other in terms of file extensions, features and use. Xml file is a markup language just like HTML that is used to store and transport data. However, Txt file is a file extension that supports only simple text files and can be opened in any text supporting program or language. On the other hand, the difference between CSV file format and Excel file format is that, both are used to carry large spreadsheet. However, in case of CSV, we get these spreadsheets in the form of simple plain text lines that are separated by commas in contrast to Excel file that support very large spreadsheets in its original format along with graphical tools and pivot tables.
