What is the Difference between Ntsc and Pal

The high, good or poor technology of the video vision depends on the technology being used to broadcast that image. A video seen as perfect in Europe will be viewed as poor in USA. The reason is not the video maker’s lack of expertise but it is simply the technologies used to broadcast transmission. In United States, Ntsc technology is used while in Europe, Australia and in some parts of Asia Pal is used. Let’s see how they make difference.

Ntsc

Its short of National Television Standards Committee, it’s the technology which uses 60 fields per second signal. In US the power generation is at 60 Hz, so this technology is equivalent to that. On televisions, 30 lines are thrown to the screen followed by the thirty other lines. This process is so fast that it is impossible to detect that.  In simple words, 30 frames per second are thrown to the screen followed by thirty others. To understand it, just imagine a projector throwing pictures on the screen very fast.

Pal

Phase Altering Lines or Pal is the technology used in Europe and Asia. 50 fields per second signal are produced with 25 frames per second followed by the alternating 25 frames. To understand it, take the example of the old silent movies in which characters used to move faster. If converted to Ntsc 5 more frames will be added to make in look faster which will look unnatural.

Ntsc vs Pal

Ntsc is American technology while Pal is European technology also used in Asia. Ntsc used 60 fields per second signal while Pal uses 50 fields per second signals. Both use half frames per second process but in Ntsc it is 30 frames while in Pal it is 25 frames per second. Both when converted to other technology lose their originality. Pal’s resolution is better than Ntsc’s resolution this means Pal has a high definition picture quality with 625 lines as compared to Ntsc’s 525 lines.
