What is the Difference between 1st Degree, 2nd Degree and 3rd Degree Burns

Accidents could be of various nature and extent. Burning is a also a type of accident and has power to ruin the life of every person. However, there are different levels or degrees of burning like 1st Degree, 2nd Degree and 3rd Degree Burns. These three types are not only different from each other in terms of appearance, but extent of danger and sensation as well. let’s have a look on the difference between these three degrees of burns.

1^st Degree Burn

1^st degree burn is the least dangerous type of burning wound. In this type of burn, only epidermis layer or upper most layer is damaged and redness of skin is the symptom of this burning extent. The affected person feels pain in bearable extent and normal healing time is less than one week.

2^nd Degree Burn

In this type of burn, dermis layer is affected up to deep thickness, but partially. It is also painful and exhibit moist texture. Blisters along with redness and swelling are the common signs. Proper medication and treatment up to minimum 3-4 weeks is recommended, otherwise scarring and contractures could appear.

3^rd Degree Burn

In case of burning all three layers of skin, the damage is called 3^rd degree burn. The affect of burning could appear up to skin tissues with numbness of affected area long with pus formation. A person feels no pain in this severe type of burning and excision becomes necessary for treatment.

1st Degree vs 2nd Degree vs 3rd Degree Burns

1^st degree burn is not as dangerous as the second and third degree burns, as it affects only uppermost layer of skin. However, in case of second and third degree burns, the dermis as well as tissues is affected respectively. On the other hand, both 1^st and 2^nd degree burns are painful and in contrast to third degree that is not painful. Similarly, there are no chances of complication in case 1^st degree in contrast to second and third degree where there could be need of excision. The time to healing for 1^st degree is maximum one week, but treatment of other two degrees could be very time-taking.
