What is the Difference between Inches, Points, Em, Dpi and Pixels
In the field of digital images, either making, developing or editing, various softwares are used. In these softwares like Photoshop, CorelDraw, Illustrator etc many terms are used for measurement of digital images. These measurements are related to dimensions, size, image quality, image resolution etc. Some of these measuring units are Inches, Points, Em, Dpi and Pixels. Inches
Inch is the measuring unit of length that is used in many measuring systems like United States customary units and Imperial units. In terms of yards, 36 inches makes yards. In case of feet,
12 inches makes one foot.
Points
In graphic designing or even writing, font size is measured in terms of points. In fact, point is the unit that is used in typography for measurement of font size especially in terms of length. Usually, a point is taken as 1/68 inches.
Em
In the field of typography, the measuring unit for point size is Em. For all the fonts that lie in the particular pint size, the unit of Em is same. In a 16 point typeface, 1 Em is equal to 16 points. It is expressed in decimal notions like 8 Em is written as 80/100.
Dpi
Dpi or Dots per Inch is measuring unit for dot density in digital print media. This term is used to portray resolution number of dots per inch. You can say that it is the physical dot density of a digital image.
Pixels
Pixel is the smallest representative unit of a raster image. It is just a single pint that is controllable as well as addressable screen element and has its own address. The arrangement of pixels is usually made in two dimensional grid scheme and pixels have variable intensity.
Inches vs Points vs Em vs Dpi vs Pixels
Ever term that is used in measurement of images and typography, is different from each other in many respects. Inches are used for measurement of image size in terms of length, width and height. Point and Em are the measuring units in typography, while 1 point is the 1/68 inches in contrast to 1 Em that is equal to 16 points. Pixel is the smallest unit of an image and number of pixels is the criteria for identifying picture quality. while, Dpi is the measurement of dot density in an image.
